The medievals took him for a herald of Christianity, I believe on the strength of a prophecy of Augustus.

Dec 11, Caroline rated it really liked it Shelves: The edge between water and land is explored as Virgil’s ship, one among the parade of ships escorting Augustus back to the port of Brundisium in Roman Italy, sails toward land on the first page of the novel. While talking to his friends and the emperor Virgil tries to explain why he feels this way, and how false muertd shouldn’t be preserved or read and that therefore he wants to burn the Aeneid, and in between he has these really intense images or hallucinations.
